Mitsubishis FTO was introduced in Japan in 1994. Originally intended for the Japanese domestic market only, the 1994 winner of Japanese car of the year has become one of the most popular grey imported cars. From the outset the design team have set out, and succeeded increating a stunningly pretty, lightweight and powerful 2+2 coupe, that is quick, fuel efficient, practical and comfortable. The end product is a front wheel drive car that is easy to drive as an everyday vehicle, costs little to run and can still put a huge smile on your face when taken out for a weekend thrash! Add to that the fact that a FTO is a car that draws admiring looks wherever it is driven or parked and you have an unbeatable package. The car was produced in 3 basic models with two gear gearbox options on each. These are: The top of the range GPX, which has a 2.0ltr V6 engine fitted with Mitsubishis MIVEC valve control. The MIVEC engine produces 200 BHP at7500 revs and has 0-60 of around 6.8 and top speed of 143MPH. Next is the GR (called the GX on facelift post 97 models) which uses the same sweet V6 but without the MIVEC system and produces 180 BHP at 7000 revs. This is good for 0-60 in around 7.3 and 136MPH. Finally the GS uses an 1800cc 4 cylinder engine producing 125 BHP at 6000 revs giving 0-60 in around 10 seconds and 125MPH top speed. Another innovative part of the FTO is the tiptronic gearbox. While the 5 speed manual car has a conventional manual shift the tiptronic has a fully automatic and sports (tiptronic) mode. When in sports mode the box allows the driver to select the required gear manually by sequentially flicking the gear selector forwards or backwards to change up or down without even lifting the power. The gearbox ECU (computer) takes care of the shift when the driver flicks the gearlever allowing the driver to take the engine to its 8500RPM (GPX) redline before firing the car into the next gear. The same ECU automatically prevents the gears being changed down too early which would cause over-revving and engine damage, and will automatically change to first should you come to a near standstill without changing gear, allowing the driver to nip out at roundabouts without embarrassingly realizing there error! The car handles superbly. With the Macpherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension the car has a very sporty, firm ride. Turn in is precise, body roll minimal, mid corner stability is exemplary and accelerating out of the apex is beautifully progressive. The front wheel drive set up puts the power down like few other and the brakes are similar to the units used on the Lancer EVO4, a car weighing a full 200 kg more. In our experience all cars have given around 25-30 MPG when being used on mixed town / motorway roads. Standard equipment in all FTOs includes air conditioning, power windows, central locking, power assisted steering, retractable electrically adjustable mirrors, green UV tinted windows, projector headlamps, twin tail pipes, high back sports seats with drivers height adjuster, 3 spoke sports steering wheel, adjustable steering column, centre console, map light, clock, volt meter, outside temperature indicator, high level brake light, and front fog lights. Very few cars do not have alloy wheels, rear spoiler and fully automatic digital climate control.
